Tales of the Iroquois by tehanetorens
This book is about the Iroquoise
tribe and their creation tales. I think that it is good because it tells the story like the Iroquois with pictographs.
Annie and the Old One by Miska Miles Illus. Peter Parnall
This book is about a story of a young girl
and her love for her grandmother. I think this book is good because it teaches children about dying. The illustration, especially
of the elders is a bit scary. The book is in English.
Saad ak'e'elchi' - Navajo/English Poetry
This is a short book of peotry collection
by children and Venaya J. Yazzie. My favorites are Kayla's dog poem, Poems by Quinn- mosi, crickett and leechaa'i. Poems
by Taylor M.-The mountain and Mourning Glory.
Dzani Yazhi Naazbaa': Little Woman Warrior Who Came Home
by Evangeline Parsons Illus. Irving Toddy
A story of a girl who was captured
and taken to Hweeldi (Fort Sumner) and her survival through the Long Walk.
Navajo ABC-A Dine Alphabet Book by Lucy Tapahonso and Eleanor
Schick Illus. Eleanor Schick
Teaching the alphabet using Navajo
related materials. I think that the glossary should have been intertwined with the letter is was teaching instead of at the
end.
The Nez Perce by Sharlene and Ted Nelson
A historical timeline of the
Nez Perce before, during and after the English invasion. It also talked about how the Nez Perce tribe lives today.
Water Girl by Joyce Carol Thomas
A story about a girl who trying
to find where she belongs in life. It was not about Native Americans. I was fooled by the cover, title and the brief summary.
Navajo Nation Government 4th edition Office of Navajo
Government Development.
Excellent book on the Navajo Government.
I liked the background explanations of the Dine, the creation stories etc.
Food and Recipes of the Native Americans by George Erdosh
A coffee table book. I was
very inaccurate on the recipe for the Navajo Fry Bread. I was dissappointed all around.
Navajo Sheepherder by Peggy Thomas Photos by Paul Canklin
I did not get to finish reading
this book because it was one of Jean Whitehorses books. I did think that it was a great explanation of Katie, an elderly Navajo
sheepherder life and how she herds sheep for a living.
